Counterculture Kids

Counterculture Kids began with an idea—an idea to share the bold, creative, and world-changing stories of counterculture icons with the next generation. What started as a spark of inspiration has blossomed into a growing series of picture books that bring music, art, and fearless creativity to life for young readers.

The series was created and written by John Berdux, who lives with his family in Charleston, SC. A lifelong lover of music and storytelling, John has always been inspired by the dreamers, rebels, and free spirits who shaped the counterculture movements of the 20th and 21st centuries. From Hunter S. Thompson to Ken Kesey, Jack Kerouac to Allen Ginsberg, their voices reminded the world to think differently, live authentically, and embrace creativity.

Sharing these passions with his daughter sparked a new dream: to create books that introduce children to legendary figures like Jerry Garcia, in a way that’s fun, engaging, and perfectly suited for early readers. With bright illustrations, accessible storytelling, and plenty of inspiration, Counterculture Kids shows children that music, art, and imagination have the power to change the world.

Because every icon was once a kid with a dream.
